From the review: "If one company was the master at casual games, that company would be PopCap. They are the force behind one of the largest time wasters of all: Bejeweled. There are two PopCap games in particular that really sank their teeth into me and still have yet to relinquish their grasp, and both of them are now available in the Nintendo DS. One of them, Peggle, was released in 2009 (you can read my review here). I had just escaped from the clutches of the other, but with its recent release it has shambled back into my life and started attacking my brain. Now I am struggling to free myself from the zombie masses once again, so I figured it would be a good time to review Plants Vs. Zombies."

Sillybandz Review

DS on DS returns! And what better way than with a review about a game based around shaped rubber bands!

From he review: "One of the latest crazes for children is Sillybandz, those little rubber bands that are shaped in hundreds of different designs. They have them for almost any thing you can think of. And now, DS owners everywhere will have the chance to “Play the Craze”. I kid you not, that is what the game says. The thing is, they actually took a different craze, ripped it off, and gave it a Sillybandz makeover. What’s even worse is that the game is actually - God help me - not complete trash."

This week's DS on DS review is on Super Scribblenauts

From the review: "Much like in the first game, the idea behind Super Scribblenauts is the freedom of your imagination. In addition to being able to spawn 24,000 nouns, you can now modify them with adjectives. So now, instead of just spawning Cthulu, you can now spawn a gigantic pink friendly Cthulu. That means you can go for a piggy-back ride on a Great Old One. Things can be even crazier than that, like when you spawn a zombie tent that attacks all living creatures and turns them into zombies. Or filling an area with bouncy balls, and then throwing a bouncy taco into the mix. The balls bounce straight up and down, but that taco will cause pure chaos. The physics in the game are very good this time around."

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

This week's DS on DS review is on Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

From the review: "Ever since I was a little kid, Spider-Man has been my favorite superhero. Now that I have gotten older (since I haven’t actually grown up yet), Spider-Man still ranks up there in the number one position. I have played almost every single Spider-Man game ever made, and I have loved almost all of them. Yes, I even liked Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge. The first really good Spider-Man game, at least in my opinion, was Spider-Man on the PS1, N64, and Dreamcast. That game is one of my all-time favorite Spidey games. Then when the movies game out, the games took a turn to sand-box territory. This was far from a bad thing, but it was starting to feel a little old. Now last year’s Web of Shadows on the consoles was a fun, but flawed, sand-box game. Thankfully, the DS version took the game in a completely different direction. Instead of a free-roaming environment, we got a Metroidvania style game. That formula had been continued with the DS version of Shattered Dimensions."

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

From the review: "I don’t know much about the cartoon for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, but if the game is anywhere near the source material, I really need to start watching it. From what I have gathered through the game and a little bit (read: about five minutes worth) of searching, Batman: The Brave and the Bold (not to be confused with The Bold and the Beautiful) nixes the darker tone of the animated Batmen that we are used to. Instead, the series moves closer to the live action days with Adam West. And Batman’s voice is done by Oswald from The Drew Carey Show. I really need to find out when this thing is on TV."

Monster Racers

This week's DS on DS review is for Monster Racers.

From the review: "I'll give you a summary of the first bit of the story, and you can tell me if you notice anything that sounds familiar. I started out as a young boy named Bob. Bob wants to be the best Monster Racer there is. I start the game after travelling to Star Ocean in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is here that I will take the test to earn my racer badge. Before taking the test, I need to first choose my starter from three monsters. Each of the monsters has an attribute that makes them race better in certain elements, and I chose a fire type. After passing the test and getting my badge, I am free to go find more monsters to add to my team. I participate in a bunch of races, and then I see some people complaining about something. It seems there is a gang calling themselves the Astral Force, and they are causing trouble (no word on if said trouble was, in fact, made double). So not only must you compete in the various races for trophies, now you have to deal with these idiots."

From the review: "I have a sordid history with horror based video games. On one hand, I love them much like I love horror movies. On the other, when it comes to horror games, I am a big wuss. If I am controlling the character in the game, that character becomes an extension of myself. Therefore, my brain says that this is all much scarier than it should be. Just ask Scott how I was when we used to play Doom 3 together over Xbox Live. The big question here is whether or not the atmosphere of a horror game from a console can be replicated in portable form. The answer is OMGGETTHATTHINGAWAYFROMME!"

From the review: "Shortly after the Nintendo DS was released, Nintendo announced that there was a game coming out called Nintendogs. When I first heard about it, I scoffed at the idea. I mean, who would want a game where you raise fake dogs? Didn't we already go through the virtual pet craze with the Tamagotchi? Then more news started coming out about it. The game was getting featured on X-Play. It was starting to look very appealing to a lot of people. Everyone I knew who had a DS was purchasing this game. Then it was finally released. I think it is fair to say that it lived up to the hype."

System Flaw

From the review: "System Flaw is a game that makes use of the outside camera on the DSi to provide the backdrop for the game. You see, there is an alien race know as the Flaw, and they can not be seen by human eyes. Luckily, you are equipped with the latest technology in order to fight them off. Now, the gimmick to this game is that whatever the camera sees is the background for the game. The sprites of the Flaw are then overlaid on top of the real world images. It doesn't matter if you are somewhere with a lot of objects that the Flaw could potentially go behind, because that just doesn't happen. I know that most of you are thinking that it sounds like a completely lame gimmick, but there is also a secondary function to the camera use."

With the upcoming release of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, I am going to be taking a look at some of the non-traditional Pokémon games that have been released on the Nintendo DS over the next few weeks, starting with Pokémon Trozei.

From the review: "Around ten years ago, Nintendo released some of the better Pokémon spin-off titles, Pokémon Puzzle League and Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, for the Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Color respectively. These games were Pokémon-themed versions of Panel de Pon, and therefore were excellent. When the Nintendo DS was released, a new puzzle-based Pokémon was created. Instead of drawing upon Panel de Pon as the inspiration, this time they seemed to draw more from Yoshi's Cookie. This new game may have gone in a different direction, but it didn't completely suffer from that."

From the review: "Two years ago, the perennial Smackdown Vs. Raw was released for the first time on the Nintendo DS. That version solely used the touch screen to play the game through the usually dreaded Quick Time Events. The second iteration of the series on the DS used the d-pad to maneuver your brawler around the ring, and the touch screen to perform the attacks. Both of these were less than ideal for a wrestling game. The latest entry in the series, Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010, has finally been released, and thankfully it is a big change from the prior two games."

From the review: "The questions the kids answer are extremely simple, things like matching the heads of animals to their butts. The thing here is that these kids start out STUPID. They seem to get more answers correct as you go along, but at first they get EVERYTHING wrong. This leads to some great scenes when you are grading the tests. You mark their papers zero, and you get a screen of the child crying, and it tells you you did a good job. So, here you are, in the crappiest "vacation" center ever, making kids cry just so you can get first place."

Here is an excerpt: "When the title screen came up, I almost thought I put in the wrong game. Of course, it was missing the obnoxious music from Puzzle Quest, but the screen is very similar. Even the menu looks familiar. It has the same layout, and the only thing different here is the color scheme and the lack of lightning. After selecting Campaign from the menu, I then went on to create my character. Wait, no, I only get to give him or her a name. Yes, much like Puzzle Quest Galactrix, you are only allowed to choose between a generic male or female Warlord. After starting my save file, I ended up on the map screen. And guess what? It too looks very reminiscent of the map used in Puzzle Quest."

When the game starts out, Felix is sitting at work, looking out the window at all the happy couples walking around, and wondering if he will ever find a girl. His boss yells at him for slacking off and staring at all the girls outside, and then send him off to deliver a package. See, Felix is a delivery boy, and he thinks no girl would ever want to be with a loser like him. He thinks his life will be relegated to sitting around alone, playing video games in his underpants. While he is running to deliver the package and not paying attention, BAM! He runs into the game's other main character Felicity, who just happens to be a delivery girl. They tell each other how cute they are and they make a date for the next day for some ice cream. This is when you get to start playing."

You ask her why she did that, and she tells you it is to remind you not to be so violent all the time. The game continues down this path of cheese and bringing the funny throughout it's entirety."

A split-second later, my friend had whipped the car around and proceeded to run them down. Then he jumped out of the car and set some people on fire with a flamethrower. From that point on I was hooked on the series that would evolve into one of the most reviled and controversial videogame series of all time. Now the carnage, drugs, and swearing are available on the Nintendo DS with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars."

Peggle is one of those games that you can sit down to play for "just a minute", and the next thing you know it's 5 in the morning. Now there is a great portable version of the game to feed your addiction when you can't be glued to your computer. If you have never heard of Peggle, the best way I can describe it is a mix of Plinko, Pachinko, Pinball, and Breakout. Seriously. At the very least, you should check out some of the videos on YouTube to get a feel for the game."
